With the pandemic forcing people to stay home, many now have the time and capacity to take care of pets.

Last Chance Pet, a local organization, had its adoptions increase almost 40% in 2020 compared to 2019.

Senior Anika Rao-Mruthyunjaya adopted her two cats, Zeus and Apollo, in April, after her other
cat passed away at the start of the pandemic. “We originally thought we wouldn’t get another cat for a while,” Rao-Mruthyunjaya said. “With the lockdown and the weather was really awful, and we were all just really bummed out all the time. Not having a cat was really getting to us.”

The family found their two cats on a Mancoon rescue site and couldn’t be happier to have two
new cats in the home, according to Rao-Mruthyunjaya.

Dogs and cats aren’t the only types of pets getting adopted. Junior Anushka Basu recently adopted her guinea pig, Pianetta, from a Santa Cruz animal shelter. The process of adoption may
have looked a little different than in years past—masking and social distancing were required—but that didn’t stop animals from being adopted. “I remember the
shelter saying that over 100 animals had been adopted that past week,” Basu said.

Named after Basu’s love of the piano, Pianetta never fails to brighten Basu’s day. “When you’re having a bad day you can just pet [Pianetta] and she instantly makes you feel better,” she said. “She’s my little buddy now.” Although she admits that guinea pigs can take a lot of work, Basu
now looks forward to taking care of her pet: “It’s a chore that I am looking forward to everyday because she is an amazing pet and I love spending time with her,” she said.

Opinion: Distance learning promotes independent study habits https://gunnoracle.com/19863/uncategorized/opinion-distance-learning-promotes-independent-study-habits/ https://gunnoracle.com/19863/uncategorized/opinion-distance-learning-promotes-independent-study-habits/#respond Thu, 08 Oct 2020 03:11:12 +0000 https://gunnoracle.com/?p=19863 Last year, I did not have consistent study habits. I would procrastinate and pull all-nighters before tests, alternating between an hour of work and an hour of TikTok. I never used class time efficiently. By the time I came home after a long day of classes and water polo practices at around 7 p.m., I was too exhausted to do my work and just wanted to relax. Part of this was due to my inability to balance multiple extracurriculars and schoolwork: I had very poor time management skills and did not know how to regulate my screen time.

Distance learning turned this upside down. Although I am receiving less direct instruction from my teachers, I have benefited from classes held virtually by learning how to manage my time and work independently.

For one, my water polo practice time has been halved. Not only has this loosened up my schedule, but I am no longer physically exhausted from practice. I actually have the energy and motivation to get my work done every day. Rather than filling this free time with more distractions, I became bored of watching Netflix and scrolling through TikTok over the course of shelter-in-place. I found myself missing school and wishing for something to accomplish. As a result, when school finally started, I was eager to learn and do my work, online or not.

While attending classes and completing homework through a screen might increase the selection of online distractions, that wasn’t the case for me. In fact, my newfound interest in learning led me to develop strategies to manage my screen time. When I needed to focus, I would set a timer for about an hour and put my phone in another room. I forced myself to focus my full attention on working until the timer went off. This strategy significantly improved my work and learning efficiency, which, in turn, decreased my stress levels and gave me even more free time.

In class, I’ve found other ways to avoid distractions. One of the biggest changes that I’ve faced with the recent transition is that my teachers can’t be there to make sure that I am on task. I’m the only person controlling my success and focus in class. This has taught me to take responsibility and keep myself in line. I make sure to turn my camera on whenever I can because it forces me to sit up and look at my screen. I have also started participating more. Speaking up in breakout rooms as well as full group discussions has been a great way to channel my full attention on class activities.

Finally, online learning has also taught me how to learn independently. I understand that teachers are trying their best to lecture over Zoom, but it is still significantly harder to learn and pay attention in a virtual classroom. To compensate, I’ve discovered a variety of strategies for learning. Through trial and error, I’ve found that I absorb material best through reading the textbook and watching Youtube videos. Distance learning has led me to utilize these resources outside of class rather than asking clarifying questions to teachers in the brief moments between classes. Simply put, I’ve become a more organized, independent student.

It’s undeniable that there are numerous problems with the new virtual learning system. Many teachers struggle to fully explain concepts over Zoom. It can be intimidating to unmute and ask questions in front of the class. It’s tempting to turn cameras off and not pay attention. However, while it has its challenges, online learning prepares students for the future. Once we reach college, most of the learning is independent, and we’ll have to manage our own time and distractions. Becoming self-sufficient is essential, and if we learn how to do this now with online learning, we’ll be more successful in the long run.

Senior Charlotte Macrae https://gunnoracle.com/19478/uncategorized/senior-charlotte-macrae/ https://gunnoracle.com/19478/uncategorized/senior-charlotte-macrae/#respond Sun, 24 May 2020 23:37:15 +0000 https://gunnoracle.com/?p=19478 The shelter-in-place orders in response to COVID-19 have altered the daily lives of many. Online school has given students the chance to completely rewrite their schedules, especially for senior Charlotte Macrae.

Due to the fact that the senior class missed out on a significant part of their last year of high school, Macrae often stays up late FaceTiming her friends who will soon leave for college. According to Macrae, at around 10 a.m, she has breakfast with her older sisters before a 10:45 a.m. tutoring session via Zoom call. For her, these Zoom meetings provide a sense of stability in her daily routine. “[The Zoom meetings] create a nice feeling of routine during this craziness,” she said.

Then, she usually completes the assigned Required Online Learning Experiences outside, while spending time with her family. According to Macrae, she prefers to do her work outside due to the sunny weather Palo Alto has been receiving. Prior to sheltering in place, her family purchased a Peloton bike, which Macrae now rides daily for about an hour and half in addition to Chloe Ting circuit workouts and other YouTube tutorials. Running has also made its way into Macrae’s daily exercise, as it has become a fun way to stay active while also allowing her to track fitness progress.

While there has been much negativity flowing around due to the current policies, Macrae prefers to focus on the positive aspects of the shelter-in-place order. At the moment, Macrae has just finished the seventh book she has read during quarantine, and will begin her eighth. “This quarantine has been nice in some ways because it has given me time to read again which used to be my favorite thing in the world,” she said. “They have been keeping me very entertained and provided a great sense of escapism.”

DIY clothing https://gunnoracle.com/19376/uncategorized/diy-clothing/ https://gunnoracle.com/19376/uncategorized/diy-clothing/#respond Sun, 10 May 2020 06:34:51 +0000 https://gunnoracle.com/?p=19376     With shelter in place, and pass-fail grades, I’m sure everyone has a lot of time on their hands. What better way to spend it than spicing up some of your old clothes? Do-it-yourself (DIY) clothes have always been popular, but quarantine has put them back on the top trends list. Popular TikTok videos show people bleaching one leg of their old jeans to give them a more unique look; others show people embroidering clothing, painting shoes and even tie-dying. However, with many tie-dye clothing items popular right now and stores charging a fortune for them, a cheaper and more fun option is to just dye them yourself. With summer just around the corner, many are making crop tops out of their larger T-shirts. This is a great way to pass time during quarantine, and is a great activity to do with your friends on a sunny summer day. For example, I took an ugly long tank from seventh grade, cropped it and tie-dyed it and now it looks super cute! DIY clothes are fun to make, cheap and easy. Many people start off with cheap shirts at Walmart or even use their own old clothes, and turn them into something they could find at their favorite stores. Now is the time to try new things more than ever before, so get creative!

Girl Scout Cookies Vie For Staff Favorite: Samoas https://gunnoracle.com/19016/lifestyle/girl-scout-cookies-vie-for-staff-favorite-samoas/ https://gunnoracle.com/19016/lifestyle/girl-scout-cookies-vie-for-staff-favorite-samoas/#respond Thu, 05 Mar 2020 20:39:43 +0000 https://gunnoracle.com/?p=19016

Since the 1950s, there has always been a debate over which Girl Scout Cookie is the best. Although other cookies are more popular according to sales, the public is definitely missing out on the superior cookie: the Samoa. Samoas provide a unique flavor that cannot be matched. The caramel, chocolate, and coconut blend perfectly together, creating a flavor that cannot be found anywhere else. All three of these are layered on a crunchy shortbread cookie, which adds an element of crunch to an otherwise creamy snack. For all coconut haters out there, Samoas do not have as strong, overwhelming coconut flavor. Instead, they offer a perfect balance of flavors and a texture that is unlike any other Girl Scout Cookie out there.

Alumni Shares Division I Experience https://gunnoracle.com/18990/sports/alumni-shares-division-i-experience/ https://gunnoracle.com/18990/sports/alumni-shares-division-i-experience/#respond Thu, 05 Mar 2020 20:36:29 +0000 https://gunnoracle.com/?p=18990

Sarah Snyder graduated from Gunn in 2019 and recently began her Division I college swimming journey at Duke. Inher first season, Snyder made enormous strides, qualifying for the National Col-legiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on three relays. “Making the NCAA teammy freshman year is something I neverexpected to be able to do,” Snyder said.

Growing up, Snyder participated in multiple sports, including equestrianism and ballet, but eventually committed to swimming in eighth grade. “I joined a summer league team which my olderbrother was already on, and when he quit, I kept going,” she said. Snyder stuck with swimming because of the challenge and reward. “Seeing all of your hard work and dedication pay off to the sport that you love the most has to be the best thing about being an athlete and a swimmer,” she said.

Snyder put a lot of time into swimming throughout high school, swimming nearly 20 hours per week, but it was still a big jump to college swimming. “We have two two-hour doubles on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and a four-hour workout on Saturday,” Snyder said.

Another big change from high school to college swimming has been the mindset of the team. Snyder feels that high school swimming was very individualized. “It would make me put lots of pressure on myself to drop times because I was swimming for myself and for my own personal times,” she said. In college, however, everything is a lot more team-based. “This makes college swimming super exciting, where everyone is screaming their hearts out to watch your teammates,” she said.

Although balancing swimming and school can be difficult, Snyder has learned how to manage her time well. Snyder feels that Gunn academics have helped her succeed at Duke. “While Gunn academics are really challenging and it sucks while you’re doing it, it really does prepare you well for college,” she said. “Even at a prestigious college like Duke, it was not hard to acclimate to the academic rigor of the school.”

Although swimming in college can be difficult at times, Snyder wouldn’t trade her experience for anything. “I really don’t think I would ever want a normal college experience because I feel like I would get so bored,” she said. “Also, all NARPs [non-athletic regular people] do is school, so it would be pretty awful.”

Teachers https://gunnoracle.com/18877/forum/students-should-choose-classes-on-the-basis-of-subject/ https://gunnoracle.com/18877/forum/students-should-choose-classes-on-the-basis-of-subject/#respond Wed, 12 Feb 2020 20:17:29 +0000 https://gunnoracle.com/?p=18877

With course selections just around the corner, some students may be struggling to choose their classes. There are many factors to consider when signing up for courses: What subjects do I want to take? How many Advanced Placement (AP) or honors classes am I taking? Is this class going to be too hard? And, of course, will I have friends in this class? However, the most important factor to consider during course selection is the teacher who is teaching the class.

Teachers can make or break a class. One bad teacher can put a damper on what would otherwise be a great se- mester. When a teacher does not explain the subject well, it can often lead to a lot of unnecessary stress, bad grades and confusion. Some teachers can also create stressful classroom environments. It is safe to say that most Gunn students already have enough stress in their lives, and getting a bad teacher can really take a toll.

Many students choose a class purely for its subject or because it is an honors or AP class and fail to consider the teacher. The drawbacks of having a bad teacher certainly outweigh that one honors class on your transcript. More often than not, AP classes are time consuming, have challenging grading systems and lead to very stressful experiences.

Students should take classes with great teachers even if they are not honors level classes, or they are not really interested in the subject. Most students are not yet sure what they want to study in college, and it is important to explore a wide variety of subjects to see what you are interested in. Teachers can turn subjects you thought you hated into great classes.

A great teacher can also make a significant impact on a student’s life. Having a class with a teacher that you feel comfortable talking to and joking around with in a stress-free environment is crucial in high school. A Review of Educational Research analysis of 46 studies showed that strong teacher-student relationships were associated with higher student academic engagement, attendance and grades, as well as fewer disruptive behaviors and suspensions and lower school dropout rates.

So, before you sign up for your classes, make sure to weigh all your options. Teachers are extremely important in the overall experience of classes. So, talk to upperclass- men about potential teachers, or at least look them up on Rate My Professor before signing up for a class.

Survivor https://gunnoracle.com/18858/lifestyle/survivor/ https://gunnoracle.com/18858/lifestyle/survivor/#respond Wed, 12 Feb 2020 20:13:53 +0000 https://gunnoracle.com/?p=18858

“Survivor” is one of the longest-running reality TV shows in history, with over 40 sea-sons over the past 20 years. The show started in 2000 and took the world by storm. The premise involves splitting 20 random people into groups called tribes and having them work together to survive in the wilderness. Every few days, the tribes compete against each other in challenges for rewards or immunity. The tribe that loses the immunity challenge has to vote one person out of their tribe. In the middle of the season, all the tribes merge into one. From there on out, there are only individual immunity challenges. In the end, the survivors that made it to the merge vote for a winner. The game is not for the faint of heart. The castaways surviveon only rice and coconuts and must hike to a well to get their water. At the end of each season, the contestants usually lose 15 to 20 pounds in under 40 days. The entertainment of “Survivor” comes from watching interactions between tribemates. Each year brings new strategies and backstabbing. The show casts many different types of people, which leads to clashing personalities, intensifying the drama. Over the past 20 years, many new strategies have developed. They range from flirting to trying to sweep all the immunity challenges to one contestant even lying about his dead grandma. The game becomes more complicated every year with new twists added by producers. Recently, contestants who were voted out were given the opportunity to go to “the edge of extinction,” an island with minimal food and water. The castaways on this island were then allowed to compete in challenges to play back into the game. No two seasons are the same. This year, for the first time ever, the show is put-ting on a season with only previous winners, making for what should be the best season yet.

Junior Julia Segal: Hanukkah https://gunnoracle.com/18664/features/junior-julia-segal-hanukkah/ https://gunnoracle.com/18664/features/junior-julia-segal-hanukkah/#respond Fri, 06 Dec 2019 20:12:49 +0000 https://gunnoracle.com/?p=18664

The Jewish community has always been an integral part of junior Julia Segal’s life. She is currently the president of the Jewnion club at Gunn and has been celebrating Hanukkah and many other Jewish holidays for as long as she can remember.

For Segal, Hanukkah is about more than just having fun and getting presents: it’s a time to bond with family and remember the hardships her ancestors had gone through. “I feel like my perception of Hanukkah has really evolved over time,” she said. “When I was little I just liked it because my parents gave me presents and I got to light candles. Now, I have learned more of the history behind it and it makes me feel a lot more connected to my religion and culture.”

Hanukkah dates back to the second century B.C. when a group of Jews in Jerusalem were being persecuted for their beliefs by Antiochus, the King of Syria. The hero Judah Macabee and others formed an army tofight King Antiochus, reclaiming the temple of Jerusalem. When they en- tered the temple, they found only a small container of oil that should have lasted one night. However, the Menorah that they lit burned through eight nights and that is why Jews everywhere light eight candles on their Menorahs.

Segal still enjoys lighting the candles, but she now has a better un- derstanding of the holiday as a whole. Hanukkah is also a time where families come together. “High school is really busy and Hanukkah is just a fun time to relax, bond with my sister and exchange gifts,” Segal said. “No matter what my family is doing for winter break, we always come together to celebrate it.”

Segal enjoys exchanging gifts with her family. When she was younger, her parents gave her a karaoke set and that later inspired her passion for singing. “Singing is such a big part of my life and I don’t know if I would have the same level of passion for it if my parents hadn’t given me that ka- raoke set,” she said. Segal likes to give special gifts to her family members to see the joy that it brings them.

Junior Hannah Schendel and Monkey https://gunnoracle.com/18652/features/junior-hannah-schendel-and-monkey/ https://gunnoracle.com/18652/features/junior-hannah-schendel-and-monkey/#respond Fri, 06 Dec 2019 20:10:21 +0000 https://gunnoracle.com/?p=18652

Junior Hannah Schendel shares a very special bond with her dog, Monkey, a 3-year-old mini labra- doodle. Schendel and her dog spend lots of time together cuddling, taking pictures and making videos on TikTok.

Schendel first got Monkey in the spring of her eighth-grade year. “I wanted a dog for the longest time, but my mom never let us get one,” she said. “But my grandma died of cancer and we were all really sad so my mom gave in.”

Schendel loves to hang out and cuddle with Monkey but admits that her parents do most of the work. “My parents mostly take care of him because I’m really busy but I walk him when I can,” she said.

Schendel finds time to bond with her mom and her dog on some weekends when they teach Monkeyhow to read. In their most popular videos on TikTok, Monkey hits a card with his paw. The card has the same word as the song or the answer to the question she asks, and Monkey has to correctly identify each card. Many people in the comment section call Schendel out for simply holding a treat behind the sign with the correct word, but this is not the case. Schendel works very hard training Monkey by saying eachword and having him guess until he hits the correct sign. After some practice, Monkey is able to recognizethe sign by Schendel’s command. As of today, Schendel has posted 34 videos on her TikTok with four separate videos of Monkey following commands and hitting the proper signs. Her TikTok account has amassed 32.2k followers and 1 million likes.

Schendel loves her dog dearly and doesn’t know what she would do without him. “He is honestly my best friend and he never fails to brighten my day,” she said. “Sometimes when I am doing homework and he wants attention, he will scratch on the door and it always puts me in a good mood.”

She recommends that people urge their parents to get a dog. Her advice to people who want a dog is to be persistent. “Just keep bugging your parents until they say yes,” she said.
